Sacred Economics Money, Gift, and Society in the Age of Transition by Charles Eisenstein

Revised as of 2020, Sacred Economics traces the history of money from ancient gift economies to modern capitalism, revealing how the money system has contributed to alienation, competition, and scarcity, destroyed community, and necessitated endless growth. Today, these trends have reached their extreme—but in the wake of their collapse, we may find great opportunity to transition to a more connected, ecological, and sustainable way of being.

This book is about how the money system can change to embody this transition, and how we might change in tandem. A broadly integrated synthesis of theory, policy, and practice, Sacred Economics explores avant-garde concepts of the New Economics, including negative-interest currencies, local currencies, gift economics, and the restoration of the commons. Author Charles Eisenstein also considers the personal dimensions of this transition, speaking to those concerned with “right livelihood” and how to live according to their ideals in a world seemingly ruled by money. Tapping into a rich lineage of conventional and unconventional economic thought, Sacred Economics presents a vision that is original yet commonsense, radical yet gentle, and increasingly relevant as the crises of our civilization deepen.

It is a keep your brain in book

I love anything by the modern philosopher Charles Eisenstein, all of his books have touched me In such a way as to inspire me on my journey towards the regenerative approach.  In his Book ‘Climate a New Story’ he talks of looking at climate change in different perspectives and to look at the very systems that we are founded on.  In his book ‘The more beautiful World Our Hearts Know is Possible’ he speaks of systems we may put in place to work towards a new world.  The book ‘Sacred Economics’ inspired me so much and gave so many practical possibilities towards different takes on a new way of building our economic system which fundamentally is where we need to begin to have more lasting sustainable impact on the world.

It helped to build my views on the very economic system that we live in and how we might go about creating our new decentralised economy, with different principles enquiring about the gift economy and how that might show up in what we create.  The very aspects of what I live for changed after trying this on and understanding more the new economics that we might build in our businesses. It was certainly a book that Inspired my work in The Ecosystem Incubator, in applying a transition economy business in action.

It is a keep your brain in book – which I love and I listened to it in small stages over years, I will certainly keep referring to it.
